Dear neighbors,
Life in our community and the wider world has been utterly transformed since I sat down to write my message for the March/April issue of Toluca Lake Magazine just a few weeks ago. At that time, we were looking forward to gathering for the annual Earth Day Celebration and Taste of Toluca, an event that, like so many others, has now been canceled. Many of the concerns that previously occupied our thoughts have been replaced by new, far more pressing challenges and worries. The situation seems to change from day to day, often from moment to moment. Although here at the magazine we’ve always focused on the joys of the Toluca Lake lifestyle, it’s impossible not to acknowledge the overwhelming sense of uncertainty that now looms over so many aspects of it.
That said, there are many things that haven’t changed. Even as we physically distance ourselves from one another in the interest of public health, our community spirit remains our greatest asset. Time and again, the residents, business owners and public figures we’ve interviewed for our stories have remarked on the strong sense of tradition, involvement and connection that makes our neighborhood so special. It’s what I personally love about Toluca Lake, and I believe it will sustain us through these difficult times.
Despite how much the world has changed since we wrote them, I hope the stories in our latest issue, along with our archive of past articles on TolucaLake.com, will entertain and cheer you as you stay safe in your homes. But the strength of our community also depends on the businesses that help it thrive, so don’t forget to keep supporting our advertisers and all your favorite local establishments in any way you can — whether that’s ordering delivery or curbside carry-out from a nearby restaurant, shopping online from a boutique or buying a gift certificate to be used later. In the coming days and weeks, we’ll keep you updated on the special resources our local businesses have to offer, and the ways you can help show your appreciation for them in return. Please be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for the latest information.
In addition, please share your thoughts and experiences with us at stories@tolucalake.com. We want to spread the word about positive and uplifting ways our community is coping, so we welcome your tips on great takeout spots, virtual neighborhood events, how your family is staying entertained, art you’re creating at home, snapshots of the beauty of the local landscape as you take your daily walks (while maintaining safe social distancing, of course), examples of neighbors helping each other, and story ideas for our next issue. Now’s a great time to stage a photoshoot with your pets and send us the pictures for our Pets of Toluca section!
In closing, I want to reiterate how much we love and believe in this extraordinary community. Now more than ever, our mission is to be here for you, as a resource and a refuge. We are all in this together, and we can get through it together. I wish you and your families strength, safety and wellness, and thank you for your support.
