In the bustling heart of the East Valley, Lankershim Boulevard is on the cusp of a remarkable transformation. Spearheaded by the renowned planning team MIG, which previously shaped the Riverside Drive streetscape plan, this endeavor promises to revitalize one of the region’s most vital transit corridors. Facilitated by Toluca Lake Beautification Partners (TLBP), the community-led process is poised to reimagine Lankershim’s streetscape, breathing new life into the area between Riverside Drive and Cahuenga Boulevard.

This initiative is driven by a vision of enhancing connectivity, fostering pedestrian-friendly environments and promoting sustainable urban living. The planning process prioritizes community engagement and collaboration, ensuring that the aspirations and needs of local residents and businesses are at the forefront. This ambitious streetscape plan will include the following elements.

Pedestrian-friendly infrastructure: Enhanced sidewalks, well-lit pathways and designated pedestrian crossings aim to encourage walking, fostering a vibrant street life and promoting healthier lifestyles among residents.

Green spaces and landscaping: This not only adds aesthetic appeal but also contributes to environmental sustainability. Trees provide shade, improve air quality and create inviting gathering spots for the community.

Furniture and amenities: Thoughtfully designed benches, shelters and other street furniture elements provide comfort and convenience for pedestrians. Additionally, amenities such as trash receptacles and bike racks contribute to a clean and organized urban environment.

Enhanced lighting and wayfinding: Strategic lighting installations improve safety and visibility along the corridor, particularly during evening hours. Clear wayfinding signage aids navigation, ensuring that pedestrians and cyclists can easily traverse the area.

Public art installations: Art and cultural elements add character and identity. Public art installations serve as focal points, sparking conversation and enriching the pedestrian experience.

The Lankershim Boulevard streetscape planning initiative represents a significant opportunity to redefine the urban landscape of the East Valley. With MIG’s expertise and the community’s active involvement, this transformative project promises to create a vibrant, sustainable and people-centric transit corridor that serves as a model for future streetscape developments across the city.

Let’s work hand in hand to create a brighter, more beautiful future for Toluca Lake and beyond.
