In an address to the Greater Toluca Lake Neighborhood Council (GTLNC) on March 18, Assemblymember Nick Schultz made a strong impression by doing something rare in politics — he asked to be there.
“He initiated the request to address our greater Toluca Lake community,” GTLNC president Tess Taylor says. “This suggests he understands that his duty is to represent residents, voters and taxpayers and to follow our direction.”
Though new to the Assembly and one of Sacramento’s younger voices, Schultz brings extensive government experience, broad policy knowledge and a deep commitment to serving the 44th District.
Throughout the event, Schultz offered informed responses to questions from board members and the public, addressing several pressing topics. On homeowner’s insurance, he committed to advocating for the inclusion of greater Toluca Lake ZIP codes in the state’s emergency protections, which currently place a moratorium on policy cancellations in other Southern California areas.
Schultz also addressed waste, fraud and abuse, pointing to over $4 billion annually spent on thousands of empty prison beds. He supports redirecting those funds toward Proposition 36, which allows felony charges and heightens criminal sentencing for certain drug and theft crimes.
On homeless encampments, Schultz called for Caltrans to better maintain its property, including freeway ramps and embankments. He has already met with Caltrans Region 7 leadership and encouraged residents to report issues directly to his office.
The tone after the event was decidedly optimistic. “People want to communicate, share knowledge and experience, and participate in their government,” Taylor says. “The feedback we received from everyone was positive and productive. We look forward to developing and deepening our working relationship with Assemblymember Schultz and his staff.”
