Halloween

House Boo-tiful

House Boo-tiful

Every October, cobwebs, giant spiders, tombstones and ghosts start popping up in Toluca Lake’s well-tended yards, turning them into classic graveyards and evil gardens! We love how this neighborhood goes all out in decorating for the holidays, and Halloween 2017 brought out the community’s creative best. Check out our slideshow to see for yourself!

Sotheby’s first annual Toluca Lake Halloween House-Decorating Contest added to the fun. Congratulations to Ruth Ann and George Jones, whose Scary Tales house received the most votes.

The homes pictured here are just some of the many that build on a longstanding tradition of elaborate Halloween decorating in the community, which is why the neighborhood tops best trick-or-treating lists year after year. With so many residents either working in or connected to the entertainment industry, it’s no wonder that each home feels like a grand production, complete with lights, horror soundtracks and, sometimes, costumed actors to scare passersby.

And while the tricks are plentiful, so are the treats. In the past, Bob and Dolores Hope had a reputation for handing out full-size candy bars, nose-shaped noisemakers and Frisbees. Many continue the Hopes’ tradition, handing out plenty of candy and creative loot to those brave enough to traverse the ghostly pathways leading up to their doorsteps.

The Say Scream house builds on this generous custom by adding a social media element. For the second year in a row, the Gallopo family took free professional photos of attendees in costume and shared them in an online gallery and Instagram feed. “I love Halloween in Toluca Lake!” says Todd Gallopo. “The way this neighborhood warmly welcomes and spooks thousands of trick-or-treaters has always brought out the kid in me.”

Spooky Steps

November 13, 2017 by Toluca Lake Magazine Leave a Comment

While flipping through our premiere issue, Toluca Lake resident Angela Niemeyer was struck by the vibrant tiled steps that Senior Editor Sarah Scott pointed out as one of her favorite architectural details of the neighborhood. Having rented the Spanish-style home in 2015, Niemeyer recalled one of the best Halloween portraits that was snapped of her family on those very steps. Along with sharing the photo with us, she expressed her love for this community and the beautiful memories her family has made here. Below is Niemeyer’s letter to the editor. Thank you, Angie, for sharing your neighborhood experiences and favorite places with us!

Dear Mark,

Earlier this week the Premiere Issue of Toluca Lake Magazine arrived on my doorstep. My first reaction was, WOW! It’s beautiful! I was genuinely thrilled and so excited to read it. The pages are filled with a wonderful mix of editorial and just the right balance of advertising for our community. The entire time I was reading the magazine I thought to myself, “My family lives in these pages!”

My husband and I met one another in 1999, while working for Starcom Leo Burnett Chicago. When the agency won the Disney account in 2002, they relocated 60 young, ambitious advertising executives to the valley. We were the eager ones. While there was pure excitement for the opportunity, there was also a tremendous amount of fear. Would we ever find a perfect community? Would we ever find “home”?

For those first few years, we rented a small apartment on Kling Street. During our early morning walks through the neighborhood, we would marvel at the giant white picket fences surrounding such beautiful architecture. Each tree-lined street seemed to have so much history, so much depth. We immediately knew Toluca Lake was where we wanted to plant our own roots. And so, we went to work.

After several months at Starcom L.A., our careers took us down separate paths. My husband built a solid career in out-of-home advertising and I went the client, print and digital advertising route. Careers aside, we somehow managed to focus just as much energy on each other. We were married in 2006. We welcomed our first child in 2009 and our second in 2012.

Shortly after, we decided to go into business for ourselves and in 2013, we opened an out-of-home sales and marketing firm near the Hollywood Bowl. Now, some of our most wonderful co-workers, mentors and friends are also our most trusted clients. Developing our business has allowed us the freedom to work hard while also enjoying every moment together with our children.

Over the past nearly 17 years, we’ve lived in Toluca Lake. We purchased our first home on Arcola Avenue from an actress who lived her childhood dream on these streets. Our promise was to stay true to the original structure, and we did. We took the baton and ran with it.

After five years on Arcola, we found our dream home on Sancola Avenue. Like many older homes in our neighborhood, our humble abode needed a lot of tender loving care. Again, our promise to preserve the original structure meant a year and a half of TLC. We needed to find a place to live, and quick! Our wonderful community provided us the opportunity to rent a lovely Spanish-style home near Lakeside, the architecture of which is featured on Page 16 of your premiere issue. We have one of our best family photos from Halloween 2015 on those steps!

Like many families in Toluca Lake, we consider ourselves blessed to live in this hidden gem tucked away in such a vast city. Our memories are endless … the Fourth of July parade through Toluca Woods; the marvelous caroling truck that strolls right past our front steps during the holidays; our weekend bike rides to Paty’s for the perfect breakfast and a glimpse of the Toluca Lake story dating back to the early 60s spanned across her walls; or our weekly pit stop at the farmers market for anything locally grown. Let’s not forget our happiest of hours at Forman’s for rustic eats, a craft beer or specialty cocktail, our occasional date night stroll to Kabosu for sushi … The list goes on and on.

In October 2016, our house was finished and we finally moved in! We have the space we need to grow and to continue making memories with our family and friends. I don’t know who or what to thank for all of this. So, from one tiny family within your boundaries: Thank YOU Toluca Lake. Thank you for allowing us to find “home.”

Sincerely,

Angie Niemeyer

Break out your haunted house décor and get your costumes ready — it’s almost time for one of Toluca Lake’s spookiest traditions! No one does Halloween like this neighborhood, and as fall begins, Cinema Secrets is busy shapeshifting into Halloween Headquarters. Offering special-effects makeup, wigs, accessories and prosthetic mask kits, Cinema Secrets is ready to help customers create their own unique looks, with trained experts on hand to offer tips of the trade to walk-ins or makeup transformations by appointment.

Perennial favorites and Hollywood blockbusters drive the makeup appointments, says Jon Stein, brand manager for Woochie, Cinema Secrets’ in-house special effects line: “Last year, Jared Leto’s Joker was our most requested makeup, with zombies, Frankensteins and Draculas mixed in. In 2017, I expect the classics will continue to be popular, along with a healthy dose of Game of Thrones looks, Wonder Woman costumes, Thors and maybe some Planet of the Apes makeups. And of course, we’ve stocked up on our Trump wigs.”

This year, the store has expanded to include two buildings next to each other to accommodate the Halloween rush while maintaining Cinema Secrets’ popular beauty products, says Stein. “As always, we’ll have plenty of scares and gore lying around, with large-scale props and all the accessories you could ever want.”

If you want to watch the experts at work, be sure to drop by on Saturdays before Halloween, when the talent of the store’s artists will be on full display: “We’ve positioned a number of our Halloween appointment stations in the front portion of our store this year, making it easier for everyone to enjoy the show as our Hollywood artists bring their creations to life!”
